about

groovy booby is a budding women’s cottage industry–100% volunteer owned and operated! The herbs used are selected specially for breast health, recommended by national breast health advocate, teacher and lecturer Cheryl Chapman, RN.

It had been nine years since taking Cheryl Chapman’s healthy breast massage training that I found myself digging around in my organic garden at Sufi Park, harvesting the herbs she recommends for breast health, and making an oil infusion. Over the years I had become ill with a rare pulmonary disease. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis was found to be the underlying immune deficiency, and is also linked to breast problems. My chest and breasts were exposed to the radiation of repeated diagnostic x-rays and CT scans, and I had taken numerous courses of toxic drug treatments.

Between the liver congestion from the medications, the chest congestion and radiation exposure, topped off with a history with fibrocystic breast disease, I experienced more and more breast swelling and discomfort, especially pre-menstrually. I remembered from Cheryl’s training that I could make a natural herbal infused oil that would protect my breasts against the harmful radiation while reducing the swelling, discomfort and tenderness significantly. Little did I know my father would be diagnosed with breast cancer and undergo a mastectomy in January 2013. About 1% of men get breast cancer.

I bottled my new breast oil and shared it with a small circle of women neighbors and friends. Its effectiveness brought rave reviews and requests for more. After making a second infusion with a homemade label, I starting selling it as a fundraiser for my favorite non-profit, playfully naming it groovy booby. “Groovy” is a jazz term coined in 1937 meaning “marvelous, wonderful, excellent, attractive.” This perfectly describes breasts, the embodiment of the miracle of life giving nourishment and human bonding. The product is dedicated to my breast guru, Cheryl Chapman, RN, who has a marvelously humorous and playful approach to the sometimes serious business of breast care.

I had no intention of making a business of selling breast massage oil. But my midwife friend Laurie Fremgen shared a sample (with my homemade label) with massage therapist Michelle Brown of Wildflowers Massage in Austin, Texas. Michelle was crazy about it, and asked for a case to sell to her clients.

The first "case" of Groovy Booby with the original home-made label, thanks to the request of Michelle Brown of Wildflowers Massage in Austin, Texas.

And that’s how it became available, thanks to Michelle. All my breast health products have come about in the same organic manner, simply by request, backed by my personal use and need.  In the process, many women have become inspired to learn more about and embrace breast massage as an intelligent health care practice.

I eventually began to share more of what I learned from Cheryl with other women, and started an unofficial movement, what I call, for lack of a better term, the  The Natural Breast-Health Project. In-services, workshops, public speaking, this website. The bottom line is that nothing is more healing than adopting a loving approach to breast health, accompanied by access to handmade organic herbal breast care products for those who need them. I am rather picky when it comes to quality, so it has been an honor and a service to develop high quality and pure-ingredient based products.

Naturally, I sent some to my “breast guru” Cheryl Chapman, dedicating the recipe to her.  She responded most enthusiastically, “I love your oil! And the name is totally awesome.”

I continued my training with Cheryl. Upon seeing the cheerful new label and hang tag, Cheryl fell in love with  groovy booby all over again. At our August 2010 Massage for the Breast Surgery Client training, Cheryl announced to all participants she was going to recommend groovy booby as her oil of choice. She even went so far as to re-publish her book to include groovy booby in the resources section. Cheryl, like us, hopes groovy booby entices more and more women to try breast massage.  See our resources page for more links to Cheryl’s important work.

Finally, what could be more timeless than women’s breasts supporting children? I’ve dedicated 100% of the profit from each bottle of groovy booby to For Kids’ Sake, benefiting orphans and school children in Bangladesh. To learn more visit www.forkidssake.net.
